Celia or Me?, Elizabeth Bisbing's first solo exhibition at SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, is a series of small- scale paintings in gouache and oil, and ink drawings that capture a young girl, Celia, at play. The title refers to the ritual of painting and drawing Celia as a meditation on the wonder and mystery inherent in this little girl's life, as well as a re- examination of Bisbing's own childhood.
The artist employs electric blues, bright pinks, yellows, reds, and broad brush strokes in her paintings, as if to throw light on the dark, forgotten corners of childhood.
Elizabeth Bisbing completed her MFA at Vermont College in Montpelier VT in the Spring of 2004. She has had several solo shows including her MFA Exhibition in Montpelier VT; Recent Work at the Monmouth Art Alliance of NJ, and Characters and Expressions at Fairliegh Dickinson University in NJ. Her work has been reviewed in New York Magazine.
