This exhibit of new paintings by Diane Churchill celebrates the sensual world of nature, primarily the power of the sun.

The dry heat of Andalucia, Spain blows through these paintings with their layers of color and embedded forms of leaves and seeds, lemons and figs. In one painting the Moorish influence in this part of Spain is evident as well as views of the Mediterranean. In others, the land erupts with dances of almond shaped leaves.
The painter spent part of a summer at Fundacion Valparaiso, an artistsı colony on the Almerian coast of Southern Spain. Here the semi-arid land is relieved by irrigated gardens of intense color and abundance. The sun is the agent of this fecundity as well as a constant, harsh companion as the artist worked throughout the day in her studio. This experience inspired these abstracted landscapes.
This is Diane Churchillıs second solo show at Soho 20 Chelsea. She has had recent shows at the Interchurch Gallery on Riverside Drive and Hopper House in Nyack, NY and has shown widely in the Metropolitan area.

An Opening Reception to meet the artist will be held on Thursday, April 29th, from 6 - 8PM.
