William Gilbert is a metal sculptor. In addition to graduation from RISD in 1986, he has an MBA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He is a Senior Lecture Professor at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he teaches 3-D Design in the Freshman Foundation Program. Bill is head of the Jewelry Design Department at Rowen University in New Jersey.
This newest body of work is made from the remnants of war. It is Bill's examination of our war culture. He has assembled metal pieces which he finds in flea markets and junk store around Philadelphia. Bill is the owner of Antique Metal Restoration dealing with the restoration of decorative arts. He and his wife, well-known silversmith Maryanne Petrus, live and work in a 19th century wool mill which they designed and renovated themselves. They have 3 children. Ruth Gilbert, RISD class of 1958, Billšs mom is a painter. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and has a studio in nearby Yonkers. Her paintings are figurative; they are life-size oil on canvas cutouts stapled to the wall. Many of her paintings include sculptural attachments her version a "Combine." She says that her paintings start in her "mind's eye" and are in fact "what the mind already knows." She is an avid picture reader, and gallery and museum goer. Ruth has had one-person exhibitions at Rhode Island School of Design, Benson Hall; Boulder Art Center, Colorado; Hudson River Museum and the Gallery on the Hudson, New York, and most recently, the Maitland Art Center in Florida.
