Don't Shoot the Birds and Other Works, the new exhibition by Ann Marie McDonnell traces the artist's use of birds as a symbol and metaphor through twenty years of her work. Rather then being a dominant theme in her previous exhibitions, birds appear "among the trees" within the context of her provocative and often political installations. Ms. McDonnell uses the bird to represent the defenseless, the spirit, and the fleeting aspect of life and she does it with wit and whimsy. Ms McDonnell will be exhibiting elements, sculptures and prints from these previous exhibitions as well as new work.
Don't shoot the Birds and Other Works is the artist's fourth solo exhibition in New York City. Ms. McDonnell is a six time recipient of individual artist awards and grants sponsored by the New York Council on the Arts. She is the 1994 winner of a New York Public Arts Grant placing her bronze sculpture, A Bird Named Goldilocks, on permanent display at Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island. Ms. McDonnell will be a featured artist on the upcoming television show, Art or Something Like it on channel 75, CUNY TV to be aired in the spring, 2007.
