In Marielis Seyler's Family-Dog-Family, the artist's fifth solo show at SOHO20 Chelsea, the notions of the temporality and fragility of life are explored.

Ten large family portraits printed on brown kraft paper will be on display in the gallery. At the center of each the family dog is prominently on display. Dogs can act as identifying signposts of the passing of time within the context of family life. Family portraits operate as relics - remembrances of these precious family pets.

The use of brown kraft paper, which is normally used as wrapping paper and then discarded, reinforces Seyler's interest in the ephemeral. During the printing process the paper is submerged in water; it becomes even more fragile and susceptible to tearing. The wrinkled surface of the final print further evokes the feeling of a fleeting moment of family history.

Marielis Seyler studied photography at the Academy for Graphic Arts in Vienna, and has worked as a freelance photographer since 1986. She has exhibited her work at Der Fluss, the Wolkersdorf Castle, the Kubin Art Symposium, and Galerie Wolfgang Exner in Austria, the Kameke Gallery in Berlin, and the Apicella- B Gallery in Germany, the Gallery St. Charles de Rose in Paris, The House of Photography in Prague and SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery in New York. Her work is part of the photography collection of the City of Vienna. In November of 2005, the artist had a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Prague.
