In To the New York Islands, Gayle Tanaka looks at Coney Island, Staten Island, the Brooklyn end of Long Island and the isle of Manhattan through a new series of digital photographic prints.
Tanaka's vision of New York City is full of color, vividly exploring the city's surfaces, from the carnival of Coney Island's beach and boardwalk, to the neon streets of Manhattan, to the outer boroughs. Her work is homage to the city she calls her home. Gayle Tanaka has exhibited nationally, including shows at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Jewish Museum in San Francisco, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art and the Center for Photography in New York. She currently has a studio at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island, New York.
