Soho20 Chelsea Gallery is pleased to present "Facing East" Tamar Vishitzky's show of paintings and collages based on Islamic prayer rugs.

Five times a day pious Muslims kneel upon prayer rugs, facing east, from wherever they are in the world, towards Mecca, the holy city of Islam. The patterns woven by tribal women into prayer rugs allude to the natural world, to architecture, and to religious and mystical symbols. Meditating on recent world events, the Israeli American artist, Tamar Vishlitzky has decided to face east also, by exploring the beauty of Islamic prayer rugs through her paintings and collages.

Movement and stillness are the dichotomies Vishlitzky evokes in her rug sized sumptuous mixed media paintings. Her small transparent collages are made with meticulous devotion, recreating prayer rug patterns in silvery strands of strapping tape that cast their shadows on the wall.

For an artist who was raised on a kibbutz in Israel this work is a brave and necessary investigation. For it is only by appreciating the beauty of another culture, rather than looking for the enemy, that one finds common ground, and It is only by repeated attempts at understanding that one learns to respect differences.

Tamar Vishlitzky has exhibited work in New York, Boston, and Colorado. Her work is in corporate and private collections in the United State, Europe, South America, and Israel. She was born in Israel, and is currently residing in Boston Massachusetts.
